6-1 Homework

1. Play Ecodefenders on line.

2. Answer these questions here! If it doesn't work on line, write your answer on paper, and bring tomorrow.

a. What adaptations were helpful for your organisms to survive in your chosen biome? Why?

b. How do changes in an ecosystem effect populations of native species? Explain what happened.

****Note: I was just reminder of your concert tonight--Awesome!! Have fun! If you need to delay this till Thursday, that is fine.

  1. A. An adaptation that my species had was being fast. This helped because my competitor was slow, so I could catch up to it. Another adaptation my species had was reproducing vastly, so that it can crowd the area to get more food than other species, until it runs out of resources.

    B. Changes in an ecosystem can effect the population of native species because the invasive species can eat all of the plants, so then the herbivores won't get their food and they will die. That is what happened to my competitor. It died because my invasive species ate all of its resources.

    1. Nice job with focus on competition for resources. What would the results be if you also were an omnivore--would some carnivores be effected too? Keep up the great thinking!

  2. A. One of the adaptations that was very helpful, was having a chemical when other predators ate you. This helped because even though you still got eaten, you would also kill your predator leaving there to have less predators that would of later on eaten you. Another one of my adaptations that helped was being able to flee predators. This helped me because whenever sometimes a predator came after me i would sometimes be able to get away and hide. This helps my population stay alive and reproduce faster.

    B. Changes in an ecosystem effect populations of native species because if the invasive species comes in and eats all the plants like mine did then there will be none left for the native species then that species will die off. Then it effects the rest of the ecosystem because there will be no more food for the native species sense the invading species ate all of it. What happened in my game was my invasive species started eating all the plats then my competitor died off and then the animal that eats my competitor started to die off because there was no more food left for it.

  4. A. I had an adaption called 'strength in numbers' that let us start with an extra animal. This was useful because I was also very small. With the two adaptions combined we reproduced very quickly and outlasted my competitors.

B.Changes in the ecosystem effect populations of native species because they will have to compete with the invading species in a game called 'Who can eat as many resources as they can?'In this game the competitors try to eat as many resources as they can before they all run out. Eventually one will go extinct because of starvation.

  5. Q1. One adaptation that I had when a chemical reaction, when my predators ate me they would die from a chemical reaction. This was helpful even though I died so would my predator. Also I was a herbivore so I did not have to compete with the carnivorous but I did compete with the native species.

Q2. The Changes in the ecosystem did effect the native species. My invasive species out numbed the native species and ate all of there resources, so they became extinct. Eventually, They apex predators had the same time schedule as me so they ate my entire population.
