Organisms observations

Kids--
Find out more and post info here. Respond to each other!!

Organisms Investigation:
Checking out our crickets and isopods:

What are some physical and behavioral features that help or diminish successful survival and ensure reproduction?
What role do they play in different ecosystems on earth?
Where are they found?

First, we read about crickets--

You can start with those.
Then, if you have more time, research the other organisms.

**
Research crickets, guppies, snails, and isopods.
Post interesting info and questions!! Talk to each other.
Here’s a start:

1.    Video of isopod on the sea floor.
Tells about giant deep sea isopod. About 2 minutes.

2.    Online reading.

Mini write up of “backyard crustacean.”

  1. How does a cricket hear with its legs?
-Crickets use a type of eardrum on the front of their legs to feel the vibration from sounds.
How does a cricket breathe through holes in its body?
-Like other insects crickets don’t have lungs. Instead they have small openings or holes on the side of their body. Oxygen goes into the holes and is spread throughout a system of internal tubes called the tracheal system. Each tracheal tube ends in a special tracheal cell that is made for exchanging gases with another cell in the body. When air reaches the tracheal the oxygen is transformed into a tracheal liquid. Oxygen then moves to the living cell and carbon dioxide enters the tracheal tube. Carbon dioxide then exits the body through the openings.

The guppy is named after Robert John Lechmere Guppy! Mr Guppy was credited with discovering the fish in Trinidad in 1866.
To stop their habitat getting overcrowded, guppies have evolved to eat their own fry. To stop this happening, you should remove baby guppies to a separate tank soon after they are born.
After breeding with a male and giving birth once, a female guppy can become pregnant again even if no males are present! This is because female guppies store sperm, which they can use to get pregnant several times, without needing a male to impregnate them.
Guppies have been deliberately set free in Asian waters to fight the spread of malaria. Malaria is passed on to humans by mosquitoes, but guppies eat mosquito larvae, which helps reduce the number of mosquitoes and slows the spread of the disease.
