6-3 Homework

Make sure you have registered for JASON. (See yesterday's post.)

For THURSDAY night's homework,

1. Play Ecodefenders on line.

2. Answer these questions here! If it doesn't work on line, write your answer on paper, and bring tomorrow.

a. What adaptations were helpful for your organisms to survive in your chosen biome? Why?

b. How do changes in an ecosystem effect populations of native species? Explain what happened.

--Have fun at your concert tonight.

  1. QA: Some adaptations that were helpful for my organisms to survive in my biome were physical defense because when predator tried to eat me they could not because of my protection. Another adaptations that help me was how big i was even though i couldn't reproduce as fast i only had one predator and then when the predator couldn't me it died because it starved.

QB: changes in an ecosystem effect populations of native species because the invasive species my eat the same thing and if the invasive species is bigger or there are more of the the native species could died off.

  2. A)I chose the colors of the forest to blend in and had less deaths towards me than when I didn't blend in. Also I did have some deaths though but the adaptation of faster reproduction helped me a lot. I also was awake when my competition was asleep so I had a feast without having to worry about being eaten until a certain time when I was about to sleep as the apex was waking up, I noticed this adaptation helped me and the population of my creature.

B)As I said, I was awake as all my predators were sleeping, this let me eat all the plants, and small animals. This affected the other animals because after I ate all the small animals the two higher level animals were just left with themselves and one starved. As I slept they were sort of in a "one on one" and of course the apex won, if the game were not to stop there the apex would have starved as well.

  6. A. Some adaptations that were helpful with surviving in my biome were: being big and fast, coming out at the same time as my competitor (the native species), the strength in numbers defense, and being a herbivore. The trait of being fast was important because with it, "Invasive"(my organism) could get to the food faster than the competitor. Also, when Invasive was starving, he could rush over to a plant or animal and eat it, so that he wouldn't die. Being big was important because no organism could eat invasive because of his size. Not even the apex predator. This helped because Invasive could just go around smelling the roses, eat whenever he wanted, and never have to worry about being attacked. Coming out at the same time as my competitor was really crucial to the extinction of my competitor, because, since I was so fast, I beat the native species to all of the food. I kept beating my competitor to the food, and he or she eventually starved to death. The strength in numbers defense was important because it gave me another invader. Since I had this extra one, I put all of the invaders very far apart from each other so they could consume pretty much all of the food. Although, if this program was more realistic, one animal would not have been able to reproduce by itself, and the trait of strength in numbers would not have worked because the invaders would be so far apart that they could never reach each other to reproduce. Finally, being a herbivore was important to my invaders survival because, since my animals did not eat any meat, my animal did not get poisoned and thrived in the environment. However, in real life, plants can poison.

B.Changes in an ecosystem effect populations of native species because in an ecosystem, when a new kid comes to town, in this case invasive, the native species may not be able to adapt. This is because the native species isn't used to fighting for their food, and making such a fast adjustment is really hard to do. But, say invasive died out, but because they poisoned many predators, the population of the native species would go up. This is because they wouldn't be eaten as much. So, changes to an ecosystem can either benefit or kill off the native species.

Additionally, I tried something. I made my predator have the same exact traits as the apex predator, except that I spread out my invasives more. Guess who got extinct. Not me. This really showed me how important position is to survival.

  7. Some adaptations that I had were in the forest biome. The forest biome was red and orange. So, I made my invasive species orange with red spikes. Another adaptation that I did was in the marsh biome. I made my invasive species small, fast, and poisonous! The smaller your creature is the more it reproduce's. So, my reproduced a lot, making three species extinct! The changes in the environment made two out of three species extinct. I killed off one species, the species that the other two mostly survived on. Thus, with the main food supply gone, the species that survived on them eventually died off.

  8. A) Some adaptations that were helpful to my invasive species were that I chose strength in number so they will be able to wipe out invasive species. I made my animals small so they can reproduce faster than others. I made my animal green in my biome so that it would be able to blend in with its environment (grassland). I also made my speed fast so my invasive species was able to attack its prey faster. I made it a carnivore so it would only be able to eat meat and I made my animal nocturnal so it would be able to attack the other species at night. My animal was quicker than the facing species I went up against.

Changes in an ecosystem effect populations of native species because if all of the native species animals all die (extinct) then they won't be able to reproduce. If the native species is not able to eat other species or plants they will all die. The native species could also not be able to adapt in the environment. If the invasive species dies out then the native species will increase its population by reproducing.

    1. The second paragraph is the answer to question B.

  9. A. My creature succeeded against all others, guarantee to wipe them out. One thing that I added was The size to Maxed-out. Even though it can't reproduce FAST it still reproduced quick. Therefore , the size made it Apex, so It had no predators. Another thing was strength in numbers, so i had more invasive on the ground devouring everything. I also chose grassland with nocturnal, so I can get the Night Creatures out of the way. The build I used, will Guarantee a Win. It's just a great one.

    B. In the Grasslands, many features are nocturnal, and not many obstacles on the plains. Therefore, I can make many species extinct. The Native species can only flee, Physical defense, and thats all. So it was simple to wipe them out, the competitor species. This is the same with the Marshes as well.

  10. A)Some adaptations were helpful for my organism to live in my chosen biome. One was the numbers in groups and that if my organism got eaten then the predator would die. And that would leave the apex predators to die off eventually after eating my organism. Also having my animal being a carnivore helped because there were lots of option on what to eat and my organism would not starve off and die. Also i choose to make my organism green the exact same color as my biome so that the animal would camouflage its self into the biome and not get eaten. I spread my organisms apart from each other so they could each have thier own space but some were to far away from the food and sadly died of hunger. My animal was also very fast so it could get to its food very quik it would beat the native species to its food and have a better chance of survival (kind of what Nayans animal did too). Since it was fast it could move around faster and away from the apex predator. Also the rate of my animals reproduction was very fast so it could have strength in numbers and the species would not die out. Eventually two other species that my invasive species ate died off and became distinct and that ultimately led to a lot of my animals dying. Also my creature was nocturnal and all of the animals food came out at night so the animal could have a feast and the apex predators were not out yet so my animals could not get eaten when they were feeding on their prey.

    B) The changes in the ecosystem affected the native species because my animal ate the same thing as the native species and my animal had better adaptations to the biome. As an example my animal could get to the food faster leading for a better chance of survival. Also my animal was camouflaged into the biome so it could not get eaten that much. The native species also died out because my organism ate all of the things the native species needed for survival so they starved to death.

  11. When I tried chemical with my creature it killed all of the species of life causing my invasive to die along withe the whole ecosystem.

  12. Thor here. When I played Eco defenders, i realized that though I did drive brown primary to extinction, and I did block a resource (most likely brown primary) from green secondary, my creature was too small to hunt anything besides brown primary. which was probably one of the weakest species's. :<
