Weather and Climate

Our studies of Weather and Climate are in full swing!

We watched the forecast today and discussed being ready for early morning frigid temps!

Today, we began to brainstorm variables that impact climate of a location.

Students shared their data with a partner who has been recording a different location. They focused on the general trend in temperatures.

We then brainstormed variables that could be linked to differences that they noted among cities.

Be sure to ask your children what ideas we discussed!.

The most effective discussions occurred where students had kept up their data collection. Please have your children share their spreadsheet with you and have a conversation about what they notice. There should be several weeks of data.
If there are missing days (a few here and there are ok, but too many missing data points give an imcomplete picture), they can go on to the "Forecast Sites" on Google Classroom and use the "historical data" to collect data on missing days.

This will help in the future when they need to graph their data and analyze it!

2019-2020 Begins!!



Welcome to the Grand Adventure that is Sixth Grade!! 



On our first days, we explored ideas related to engineering, group work, and our roles. What role do we play now and what roles would we like to explore this year as we stretch ourselves as students and humans?

Winter Tracking!

Many thanks to Jenny Talancey, who led all 3 classes in an outdoor investigation in perfect winter condictions on Tuesday, 3/6.

Students measured, analyzed, and discussed evidence left my animals in the school yard environment.

Go outsid and see what you can find around your house.

What evidence is there about what lives nearby?

Winter Gear!

Good morning,

I hope this finds you well!

I just wanted to alert you to a new opportunity we have.
Ms. Talancey, a wildlife biologist, has offered to share her expertise with our students.

As a result, we will be having class outside more frequently. Since the snow offers the perfect opportunity to watch for signs of life (tracks), we will be outside Monday and/or Tuesday.

Please ensure students have snow boots, gloves, hat, warm coat as we will be outside learning together for a full period.

Classroom Updates

Here are a few images from last year's events.

Ocean Currents

First, we had oceanographer Tucker Sylvia come in to share his expertise on ocean currents.
He was impressed with the students' knowledge and was adept at adding information to their understanding of how the ocean impacts climate.

He discussed deep water currents and surface currents.







This should help as students complete their climate slides this week. Please ask them to show you what they've learned.
They have been working on the slides for a couple of weeks and are integrating what they know about weather and climate to "their" city. (The one for which they have been collecting weather data.)

Missing Work-Makeup Info

Absent students--makeup work.

This is for families of students that missed some days around Thanksgiving. I hope everyone
had a happy and healthy Thanksgiving!

Below are a list of concepts/activities that we did in class, ranging from Thurs, 11/15 to Wed, 11/21.

Please review missed experiences and have your child complete and turn in any work by next
Friday, 11/30 in order to be able to build on ideas and move forward.
They can bring me work and ask any clarifying questions.

"Seasons" reading in book and detailed note taking.
Take notes and hand in.

“Seasons” multimedia review on FOSSWEB
In person simulation of seasons and analysis of solar angle, impact of latitude as a variable of climate.


Friday:
Complete yesterday’s reading and notes.
Begin to apply ideas of latitude and impact of climate by making initial slides to insert maps of location.
(Template on Classroom)
Complete the slides.

Monday, 11/19:
Analysis of “Seasons” online multi media
Write a paragraph about this, comparing at least 2 cities and one variable.

Distinction between Climate and Weather (Absent students will get handout. In class, we discussed
and revised notebook entries)
Update (and catch up on chunks of missing data) weather data
Do this at home.


Tuesday:
Continued discussion of differential heating
Radiation foldable-using radiation online multimedia and identifying key characteristics and how
it plays out on earth. (Take notes on this, with models)


Wed:
Completion of slides and foldable of Radiation.
Cross over of Social Studies and Science--applying ideas and technology of early Thanksgiving.


Social Studies (Tuttle):
Mon/Tues:Sharing of student projects on place.
Have ready for next week with rubric.
